Day 5 Unicoi Gap to Dicks Creek Gap (16.7 miles)
Caught a shuttle from Hiawasee to Unicoi Gap (where I finished yesterday). Before I left hotel I booked room for 2 more nights. Weather tomorrow is bad. Thursday not much better. I’m ready for a zero day. Legs are pretty dead after today’s long hike. Won’t hike tomorrow and will decide on Thursday sometime tomorrow. Hotels around here are packed as lots of people getting off trail.
Some of the people on my shuttle this AM pictured below. Note the big German dude in the kilt!
This is the AT plaque at Unicoi Gap.
Lot of steep ups and downs today. Probably why I’ll have a tough time getting out of bed tomorrow!
This is from top of Rocky Mtn (elev 4017). That was a gain in elevation of 1100 feet in 1.4 miles. My exact thought while taking this pic “I hope the Trail doesn’t go over peak in distance”.
This is from the top of Tray Mtn (elev 4430). 3 more mountains to cross then downhill to Dicks Gap.
Finished hiking about 4:30. Hiawasee is about 11 miles from Dicks Gap and was going to try to hitch a ride but a shuttle driver pulled up right away and gave me ride for $10.
Looking forward to a day of rest for my feet and legs…and to watching storm from indoors vs tent!

Glad you’re not outdoors today. Nasty rain storm. I’ve been thinking about you today. So happy you’re dry and not an AT-martyr!
Thanks, Lela. So glad you are following. I may wait until Friday to head out. Thanks for your support.
Glad you are resting for a few days and watching the storm from indoors……that was like walking to beyond Webster in a day. My oh my!!!!!! Keep going my brother👏👏👏👏👏
As Lou O would say about the kilt guy “that’s a big motor scooter”!!! Enjoy your day off, hope they have the Golf channel.
He is a big motor scooter. Lou makes me think of Blue Buff. This hike is like scaling that buffalo 40 times a day!
Happy you are inside, dry and safe. I know it is rain, but it there wind also? A rest will be good for you and your feet and legs. Love You.
You deserve a day off 🚶🚶. Perhaps you’ll ease the discomfort with a bit more brew🍺 Any chance you’ll run out of the jerky supply soon!
Impressive that you are attempting this amazing journey! So glad to see you are still applying sound decision making in resting and staying out of the nasty weather. 🙂
Proud to say “hey, look what my cuz is doin’!
It is so much fun following this. I didn’t realize there would be so many people hiking the trail at any given time. If you do decide to rest for a few days I hope you brought a kindle. If you ever have access to internet and can download a few books, i still recommend, A MAN,A CAN, A PLAN. Also; I hope you are writing in a journal. It will be interesting to read this time next year. What an adventure!
