Day 148 East B Hill Rd to Old Blue Mtn Tentsite (13.2 miles) 1946.1 miles total

Met Gang Grey (aka Franko, Todd, Mike, and Tom) in Andover. Very small town so I heard those Harleys coming! We had breakfast, a beer, and lots of laughs in a couple of hours. They also brought me a care package from Dawn and Dave. Set on bandanas now. Thanks, everyone. Good for my sanity!

Got started hiking about 1:00. Terrain is significantly less difficult. A bit tougher than average. Still a few smaller rock scrambles. Able to move at a much more mentally acceptable mph.

Right now weather forecast is good for the next week. Only 3 more town stops planned. Last will be Monson. Really hoping to make it there next Friday or early Saturday. Leave Sunday into the 100 Mile Wilderness (relatively easy hiking but nothing for 100 miles). After that it’s 15 miles in Baxter State Park to Mt Kathadin.

I will then officially retire from long distance hiking…except that you have to walk 5.5 miles back down mountain to parking area. Gonna have to make sure I don’t gravity blaze that!

Happy trails!

Day 147 Mahoosuc Notch Tentsite to East B Hill Rd (18.4 miles) 1932.9 miles

Made good mileage today but it took a while. Hiked for 12 hours so I could get to a road to hitch into Andover, ME.

Mahoosuc Notch began almost as soon as I started shortly after 6AM. When God created the world, I think it got late on day 6 and he had a bunch of boulders left. This is where he got rid of them.

Terrain was pretty much like below for 1 mile. Up pile of boulders, down other side, repeat…again and again.

FullSizeRender

I don’t know if it was toughest mile of trail but I do know it wasn’t the most fun!

Had to take my pack off to crawl through a couple crevices like below.

FullSizeRender1

The amount of rock climbing/mountaineering since the beginning of the Whites has surprised me. If you want to simulate at home put a chair and a table about 2 or 3 feet apart and a couple feet from a counter. Step on to chair, then table and then counter. Go back down. Keep repeating for an hour and a half. If you want a little more reality, water them down. Guaranteed to build thighs of steel.

Took another 2 hrs to go next 1.5 miles up Mahoosuc Arm.

FullSizeRender2

After that it gradually became more like hiking. Was even able to move at 2+ miles per hour for a few stretches. That’s more my style.

Speck Pond below.

FullSizeRender3

The lack of wildlife in VT, NH, and now ME is still quite eerie. Saw a grouse (I think) today. Biggest animal, other than a few turkeys, I’ve seen for a while.

FullSizeRender4

Hoping to see a moose somewhere in ME. They say best odds are to be by pond at sunrise/sunset.

FullSizeRender5

Staying at hostel tonight. I have private room with TV so happy camper.

Planning to meet Gang Grey, a bad ass motorcycle gang out of NJ., tomorrow. Actually a group of friends from Lake Hopatcong who are in ME on a bike trip. Meeting for lunch so will get a little extra rest which will be good after long day today.

Had to face the fact that I won’t finish Sept 7. Very difficult for me to admit won’t happen but it’s virtually mathematically impossible. Sucks but now shooting for Sept 9.

Happy trails!

Day 146 Mt Success Tentsite to Mahoosuc Notch Tentsite (8.3 miles) 1914.5 miles total

Another rough day. Don’t know if it’s because trail is still really difficult or something else. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

New Hampshire tortures you tight to the bitter end. Had to go up these rocks.

FullSizeRender1

Finally made Maine. Final state!

FullSizeRender2

Yeah, we’re going up there. Goose Eye Mtn West Peak.

FullSizeRender3

Maine doesn’t exactly begin easily. They have rocks, too. Went down these rocks. Shortly after that walking on a narrow path ground gave way and tumbled down about 3′.
Didn’t get hurt but was laying on my back(pack) for a few minutes. Like a turtle flipped over on it’s shell.

IMG_1377

Going up there, too. Goose Eye Mtn East Peak. Very boggy around here. Floating mud. Stepped on what a thought was a log. Sunk into muck over my ankle. Some places this crap is 12″ deep.

FullSizeRender4

Stopped to tent just short of Mahoosuc Notch, according to guidebook, the most difficult or fun mile of the trail. Major boulder field. Takes people 2 hours to cross this mile. Doesn’t sound like fun to me!

Day 145 US 2 to Mt Success Tentsite (14.7 miles) 1906.2 miles total

Not that much easier hiking today. Guess I was expecting bigger change from Whites. Still crossed 3 Mtn peaks. At 3500′, about 2000′ less elevation than most in Whites.

That 14.7 miles took me about 9.5 hrs so still tough going. Lots of large rocks that are difficult to navigate.

FullSizeRender

Physical aches and pains are piling up. Nothing too bad. Feet are always sore. Toes have been tingly since about second week. Both knees now sore pretty regularly. Think worn out from all the large step ups and downs required to mountaineer the Whites. Elbow I fell on in PA still a bit tender. Guessing I cracked bone because lump there and don’t like bumping it. Thumbnail smashed in fall in VA now coming off.

Other than that, I’m a pillar of health!

FullSizeRender1

Stopped short of ME by 1.5 miles. Could see rain coming when at top of Mt Success. I’m tenting 0.1 mile from top of mountain. Got tent set up right before first drops. Don’t like tenting this close to top of a mtn but am in a pretty protected spot.

Thunderstorm started about 9PM. Pretty noisy up here. Rain, but not too hard.

FullSizeRender2

Hoping to be in Andover, ME in 2 days. It’s about 37 miles so will be stretching.

Happy trails!

Day 144 Carter Mtn Tentsite to US 2 (8.7 miles) 1891.5 miles total

Good news is I’ve got fewer than 300 miles to go and I’m finished with the Whites. Bad news is only 8.7 miles today.

Just didn’t have much in the tank after really difficult late afternoon yesterday and early morning today.

FullSizeRender

Hoping that short day refreshes legs.

FullSizeRender1

16.5 miles of NH left. Expecting to be in ME tomorrow.

FullSizeRender2

Hate days like today. Very frustrating. I don’t think anything is wrong physically so expecting tomorrow to be better.

Day 143 Pinkham Notch to Carter Mtn Tentsite (12.4 miles) 1882.8 miles total

No taxi or shuttle service in Gorham so have to hitch 11 miles back to trail. Not having much luck until I got to convenience store half mile up road. Ran into 3 hikers (Scalliwag, Giggles, and Juan Gone) who I’ve seen since VT. They were getting a ride from a former hiker, Base Weight, who lives in Gorham. Made room for me also.

I really don’t care to see another rock in my lifetime. The ups over rock I can handle. The downs are just plain dangerous and scary.

FullSizeRender

Today’s hike was mostly up and across Wildcat Mtn and Wildcat Mtn Ski Area.

Pic below is looking back down to Pinkham Notch, today’s starting point.

FullSizeRender1

Hiked over Wildcat Mtn peaks A, C, D, and E. Bummed we missed B…not!

FullSizeRender2

Starting to get close to end of Whites. They’ve been as advertised and as much as this old guy can handle.

FullSizeRender3

The final Hut I’ll pass, Carter Notch Hut, is located near this lake.

FullSizeRender4

Stopped in for a bowl of soup. They have soup and baked goods for sale to hikers passing through during the day. Nice break.

FullSizeRender5

Not sure exactly where Whites end but I think it’s about 7 miles from where I am tonight. Hope I can get back to 16-20 mile days soon.

Happy trails!

August 19

Day 142 Gorham, NH Zero Day 1870.4 miles total

Ended up not raining as much as expected. Could have hiked but once I’ve committed mentally to a zero day there’s no changing.

Golf course across street from motel. Cruel and unusual punishment.

Before I started this trek my goal was to raise $50,000 for the charities I’m hiking for. Thanks to your incredible generosity we’ve already surpassed that and will raise more than $60,000 before I finish. Simply amazing. Thanks so very much!

Met Indy, a 2010 thru-hiker, over a beer. Fun conversation about places along the trail. We both agreed that this hike is 90% hard work and not a lot of fun but the other 10% makes it worth it.

Weather supposed to be good next couple of days. Hoping to be out of Whites in 2 days and in Andover, ME in 4.

Happy trails!

August 18

Day 141 Osgood Tentsite to Pinkham Notch (4.7 miles) 1870.4 miles total

Started raining early this AM. Cold, wet hike down to Pinkham Notch. Saw a couple SOBO’s. Felt sorry for them as they were heading up into worse weather.

Was able to get a ride from there into Gorham with several other wet hikers. Was planning on getting to Gorham on Saturday…just from 21 miles further up trail. Good news is hotel and much needed shower and laundry. Finally rid of muck from bog fall.

Rain off and on tomorrow. Will be zeroing. Weather sounds good for Sunday and Monday.

Happy trails!

Day 140 Mitzpah Spring Hut to Osgood Tentsite (14.9 miles) 1865.7 miles total

The Hut had about 60 guests last night. Slept in bunk room with 7 others. Thankfully only one fairly mild snorer. My air mattress in tent is more comfortable than wooden bunk.

Had a great breakfast: oatmeal, coffee cake, eggs, bacon, and hot chocolate. Gorged once again.

Good thing I was well fed because today’s hike was a physical challenge.

FullSizeRender

Had to cross the Presidential Range above tree line for 12 miles. That means open to the elements and no tenting (fragile ecosystem and dangerous). No choice but to go 15 miles.

Crossed Mt Pierce (4312″) and Mt Franklin (5014′) and wind was howling. Had to be close to 40 miles sustained and cold. Put gloves on for just second time of entire trip.

Also skirted summits of Mt Eisenhower and Mt Madison in the 5 miles to Lake of Clouds Hut. Stopped in there for some hot chocolate and to warm up.

FullSizeRender1

1.6 miles and 1150′ elevation to Mt Washington (6288′). That wouldn’t be bad on a calm, sunny day. Today we are in clouds and cold wind will get worse.

As you leave Hut there is a sign warning to stop if weather bad because of possibility of death.

It was an insane hike up. If wind was from side it would practically blow you off trail. Into it I just put my head down and leaned forward. With it was the craziest. Would go faster than I wanted over rocks. Couldn’t see top through clouds until I was right there.

FullSizeRender2

50 mph sustained winds with gusts to 70 and wind chill low 30’s at top. Plus it’s kind of drizzly because you’re in cloud.

They did have a snack bar (slice of pizza and bowl of chili). They also had a hiker lounge in the basement with some tables, electrical outlets, and bathrooms.

FullSizeRender3

Only 9 miles to go. Most above tree line and above 5000′.

FullSizeRender5FullSizeRender6FullSizeRender7

Passed Madison Spring Hut at 4:30. Only 3.1 miles to go and one big climb over Mt Madison (5366′).

This is looking North fro Mt Madison. I’m going north so should be going north into that flat expanse but nooo. We gotta go south so we can stay in mountains. Like to talk to the folks that devised that. You know they were laughing!

FullSizeRender8

Late in the day Mt Washington is still in clouds. If you zoom in on left third of pic you may see a road. You can take a cog train to top or drive. People buy “My car made it up Mt Washington bumper stickers”. I say try walking!

FullSizeRender9

Hoping to make it to Gorham. NH in 2 days. Really need to do laundry and resupply. That will be a week since last!

Happy trails!

Day 139 No Pond Tentsite to Mitzpah Spring Hut (8.7 miles) 1850.8 miles total
That was a hard 8.7 miles.

Walked along Webster Cliffs. Great views but wind was 40mph+.

I usually don’t get passed by too many people in a day. Young day hikers were flying by me. Probably passed by 20!

There was a lot of rock climbing today. Had to toss stick up ahead couple times because needed both hands. Lots of stretches like below and then, of course, you have to go down similar. I’ve learned to swallow my pride and scoot down on my butt at some points.

That little dot in center of pic is the Hut. Finally got there at 2:30.

Ran into Alexander (Big Foot) who took pic of family on day 1. Haven’t seen him since Hot Springs, NC. Long time ago!

View of dining area and kitchen behind.

Great dinner: bean soup, bread, salad, pulled pork, baked broccoli, and blueberry bars for dessert. I pigged out.

Weather tomorrow is supposed to be good. Almost 6 miles to Mt Washington. Hope to be there by noon. Hoping to make 15 miles total.

Happy trails!
